When is the first ultrasound? [high risk] [ultrasound]
If the pregnancy is high risk, when the first ultrasound? Im just curious.

Reply:Somehow it seems to depend on the dr. I had my first u/s (the wand kind) at my first appt. which was approx. 6-7 weeks. The I had some spotting over last weekend so I went in and they did another one, with the wand again. I have the big one where you find out the sex at 20 weeks I think. My dr. has the machine in his office, so maybe that's why they do it so frequently. I'm also 37 so that may be a factor too.
What I will say is that having the u/s so early really calmed me down and made me feel more secure about the pregnancy. We have seen the heartbeat from the first u/s. My dr. says once you see the baby and the heartbeat on a sonogram the risk of miscarriage is less than 5%.

Oh, I am VERY confused about everything! 
I'm not too skinny- I weigh 125 and am 5'5". Just lost 30 pounds, in fact! Grrr! Going to gain it back, I guess.
She didn't specify about the heartbeat thing… Guess I'll find out when I go.

Reply:Thank you. I just called my doctor to ask about the first appointment, and the receptionist was kind enough to fill me in on the timeline.
She said the heartbeat can often be detected at 6 weeks and that my first ultrasound will be at 12 weeks. Since she said "first" I am assuming I will have more than one…
She also said I will have a pelvic and a pap smear. I'll also get to ask the doctor the tons of questions that I have!!
Thanks for the info. I guess everyone's doctor is different.

Reply:My Doctor only dones 1 ultrasound if pregnancy is not high risk and there are no complications.
I got my First Ultrasound at 19 weeks and It will be my last unless dr cannot tell what way the baby is lying towards the end or I have complications.

I had my first at 8wks it was so neat we got to see and hear the heartbeat my next one is at 17wks we will find out the sex.
