PS I too have PCOS diagnosed 12-99

Reply:It was the pain that made me think it might have been a miscarriage. It was horrible in that I couldnt move, could barely talk and I was shivering all over even though I was fully clothed and warm. There was no bleeding whatsoever which I am thankful for because then I would have really freaked out.
My hips never did bother me and after a couple of hours there was no pain and it was like nothing had happened at all. Dh couldnt beleive it because normally my threshold for pain is great. He has seen me deal with kidney stone pain with barely a sound or complaint but this pain I couldnt handle.
Since you are still feeling pain you might want to call your dr and see what he/she suggests on checking it out or not.

Let me know again what it must feel like. I suppose to be 32 weeks, but I am measuring 36 weeks. I feel like Im in pre-labor.

—————–
Chloe is due 07/27/03

Reply:Hilarious. This weekend I read about the oligo form and the other one which of course has now escaped me. The other one being too much which is called "blank"hydramnios. How ironic.

——————
Marie
It's A Boy!!
Expected August 2, 2003

Reply:Hey Marie!

There is actually a difference between leaking amnio and too little amnio. The condition of having too little amnio (wherein not enough is being made) can be extremely dangerous, and if it continues for more than 2-3 weeks, they usually do a section (too high a risk of cord accident to just induce). But like I said, it is becoming common practice for dr's to hold women in the hospital whose water has broke but labor has sucessfully been prolonged in.

"the amniotic fluid continually replaces itself at the rate of every three hours"

What most likely happened with you brother is Oligohydramnios, which is where there is actually not enough amnio produced in the first place.

"In early pregnancy there is the worry of amniotic adhesions causing deformities or constriction of the umbilical cord. There is also concern about pressure deformities, like clubfeet, from not having enough free space in the womb"

"Later in pregnancy oligohydramnios is one of the signs of fetal distress. This occurrence can cause compression of the cord, which can lead to fetal hypoxia, meaning that the baby is not getting enough oxygen."

Just a few tidbits for you. I remember the story of your brother … it makes me shudder at the pain you all felt over that. It also makes me think how very lucky I am that although my last 2 children had problems, they were and are ok.

"Hugs and Kisses"

——————
Angel, et al

Reply:Glad this came up Kelly!

Angel – you cannot dry out, But low levels are a common problem actually. My mother had this with my brother.

Nville1 – I have to say that when you stated the germ factor with insertion of fingers, well I couldn't help but think of how boring a sex life would be if this posed THAT much of a threat even with washed hands as you said. Not to say that when there is forplay that a person's fingers would go so far as to reach your cervix, however any germs on those fingers would pose a threat since germs do have a life of theirown and spread all on their won too. So try to give a person credit. She even used gloves so hey. I agree the best way would be to have your doc check you, but in her case of being so far from the doc then it would be a shame to have to drive all the way there for what would likely be a false alarm. Had she exibited any other symptoms of early labor then I would say for her to make that trip.

——————
Marie
It's A Boy!!
Expected August 2, 2003

Reply:Thanks Angel.

You have been a really big help and put my mind at ease.

I think when I go to the doctor Monday I am going to demand her check my cervix anyway. Just to make me feel better.

——————
Chloe is due 07/27/03

Reply:No kidding about the head thing! With my 2nd pregnancy my DD dropped at 27 weeks and her head could be clearly felt just behind the cervix, but the doc refused to check!! A week later after many many episodes of sporatic labor, I insisted he check (by which point I was 2+ dialated), and within 10 mins I was given terbutaline, ordered not to leave the city (it was 4th of july weekend), taken out of work, and put on modified bedrest! If I had listened to his "oh, it is nothing, just BH, and you are just fine" there is no telling what would have happened! THAT is why I preferred to know myself what things felt like in there. If I hadnt felt that dialation and insisted on the exam … well, I hate to think of it.

momofa4yrold, even if you have a slow leak, you body is constantly producing amnio fluid. It is virtually impossible to "go dry". In fact, it is becoming a fairly common practice to prolong pregnancy – weeks if possible – after a premature rupture of membranes if it has happened way too early. A "massive increase in discharge" is also really normal in the last weeks. If you really become concerned that your water is leaking, there is a test they can do to determine if the discharge is amnio or not.

——————
Angel, et al

Reply:Hi
I think the reason may be, is that the germs that may be present under your fingernails and cuticles, are very different that the germs that are harbored in the genital region of both men and women.
When germs are introduced into an area where they do not belong, sometimes they can cause a problem.
Remember, too, that your body is quite used to being exposed to your parnter's genitalia and its normal flora.

While manual manipulation can certainly be a part of any sexual activity, generally speaking the guy is not going to be probing way, way up there, trying to get a finger into your cervix (hopefully not, anyway!)

And, remember, the chance of infection is remote, in any event. I once volunteered for 30 days in Africa in a tiny village. We had set up a mobile clinic. There one exactly ONE speculum that was swished around in soapy water for about 100 women, many of whom were pregnant. It was very primitive. I remember seeing one lady who had delivered several days before, and she had all sorts of leaves stuffed in there, the translator told us it was very common to "stop the flow of vital fluids" from the body.

So, the body can tolerate a lot. It is just less than optimal is the point I wanted to get across, to probe around in there. You probably won't glean much useful info anyway, unless the baby's head is right at the introitus.

Good luck ladies!

Reply:Thank you both for posting. I did use gloves.

I was wondering the same thing though. If it is really that dangerous to contact an infection, why is any type of sexual intercourse OK during pregnancy up to delievery? The only thing I have heard or red or have been warned about was not to let him blow air up there (which I have never even heard of until I got preg.). He doesn't use gloves or a condum when we have sex.

Also, I know it is routine that in the 8th month I will start having regular checks on my cervix at every visit up to delievery.

Thank you for helping me understand what it is to feel like.

I did call my doctor and she told me I was just getting over axious and worring over nothing. That really didn't make me feel any better. How is she suppose to know that over the phone?

I am feeling better now. I have only had 2 contractions today. But, the massive increase in discharge has me a little worried. How long can the baby live in an empty sac if I am slowly leaking. One of the stories I heard was one of my sisters friends lost her baby at 33 weeks because all of her water had leaked out and she didn't know it. She was doing her kick count that evening and didn't get 10 kicks in 2 hours. Her baby was dead. How are you suppose to prevent that from happening?

——————
Chloe is due 07/27/03

Reply:guy,

From your description in the other thread, I would venture a guess of "fingertip" dialated, which roughly translates to 1 cm outter os dialated. I agree with guy that the outter portion of your cervix can be slightly dialated without the inner portion being dialated. Also, especially having previously had a baby, it is relatively normal at 32 weeks to be slightly dialated.

While I am sure guy is correct that it is not the necessarily the best thing to check your own cervix (and I KNOW that all health care professionals are going to tell you not to), and I encourage if you decide to, to use gloves, I also understand the possibility of a doc telling you that your symptoms are nothing when that is not the case, as well as being far from the hospital.

I am currious … I have never had a doc tell me my DF could not touch me in such a manner during sex … so why tell me that I cant do it? For that fact, I was only told I could not have sex when premature labor was confirmed … and I am positive that a man can penetrate all the way to the cervical opening! Just some thoughts to ponder … lol

——————
Angel, et al

Reply:I have to discourage a pregnant woman from checking her own cervix.

First and foremost, is for reasons of infection. Even if you wash your hands well, there are germs under your fingernails that cannot be completely removed. It is possible to put germs that naturally inhabit your hands, into and around your cervix. Most times, probably nothing would happen, but sometimes those germs may flourish and give you chorioamnionitis, which is an infection of the tissues and lining inside the pregnant uterus.

Secondly, the outside of your cervix can be open, yet the internal part (called the internal os), may be tightly closed. The internal os is very difficult for a self-checker to reach, by virtue of the position necessary to get there.

Thirdly, you have no way of knowing if there is a small leaking in your amniotic sac (bag of water). Sometimes it presents as just a small discharge, and many women don't even know it has happened. Usually if you go to a hospital, they check for this routinely before doing an exam. But even if they don't, they use a STERILE glove to check.
And even with a sterile glove, they don't like to check if there is even the tiniest break in the amniotic sac, because it pushes bacteria from the outer part of the vagina, into and around your cervix.

Lastly, there are some times when checking a cervix can lead to heavy, in some cases, massive bleeding. Undiagnosed low lying placenta, placenta previa, vasa previa, thrombosed cervical veins, etc.

It just isn't a wise time during pregnancy to poke around in there. If you are having signs/symptoms of preterm labor, the SAFEST thing to do is call your doctor and get his/her advice about what to do. IF you have to go to the hospital and get checked out, it is a small inconvenience, and you will know the next time that that particular symptom wasn't worrisome.

I am a labor and delivery nurse, and see many, many women who come in with "false alarms" and some serious, yet early problems. Better to play it safe, even though it is tough going in to the hospital.

Reply:We had a topic on here once before about checking your own cervix. Fntsangel was telling us how she learned to do it when she was pregnant and was able to stop here pre term labor. I was just curious on what it felt like.

I have a 4 yr old son at home and I live 2 hours away from our hospital. I can not just run to the ER everytime I feel like something is wrong to wait there all night and told to go home. I would go if I saw blood or if my water broke. Other than that I would like to know a little bit more about my body.

Does any one else remember our previous post on this subject that could help me.

——————
Chloe is due 07/27/03

Reply:Hi
Even though I am not the intended recipient of your message, I would like to make a comment.

All cervixes feel different. Even from one pregnancy to the next, they can differ on the same woman.

If you feel as though you are in prelabor, and are not due until 7/27, you should call your doctors office and get worked in for a check to make sure you are not.
I know you said you are measuring 36 weeks. I am presuming your dates were accurate early in the pregnancy. You can still be 32-33 weeks and measure 36 weeks. Ultrasounds ARE NOT ACCURATE for dating in the last 6 weeks of pregnancy, they can be off by 2 weeks or more.
The earlier an ultrasound is done in a pregnancy, the more accurate. Especially if coupled with the woman's LMP info.

So get to your doc asap if you are having preterm labor symptoms. It may not be too late to stop it, if it is real preterm labor. Trust me, you want a healthy, full term baby if at all possible.

Hi. Yesterday at my appointment 40 weeks I saw my doctor and she found me 70% effaced and 1 cm dialated. I lost my mucus plug and small amounts of bleeding. (My doctor thought it was normal.) I started with contractions that morning around 11 hours to eat, she said lightly. Example, crackers, fruit, yogurt and juice! I AM starve! And there is no sign of a baby on the road. The contractions stopped! After 4-5 hours yesterday morning and never returned. My blood is stopped.

Now, just below my belly button I feel pain on my skin and it feels to me a little swollen. Why was i dont know.

I wondering if its possible that after your dialated when you can go back and completely closed? Or is it just progress from there?

Also any advice that can help progress my labor? I am currently one day late and I can not wait any longer.

Thanks.

Reply:Unfortunately it can happen. While I was at the hospital I was checked at one point and told I was 7cm….then later told I was only 5cm….while its more common to progress, you can digress too….good luck!

Reply:I know this it is not stypical for your cervix to lengthen (de-efface)if you are put on bedrest.

The dilitation I don't know about.

Remember though that some people who examine you may feel things differently. For examply, a person with larger hands may think you are not quite as dilated as someone with smaller hands. I know that there is a method to determining it, I don't know what it is.

Just remember that if someone tells you that you are 6cm, and then another says you are 5cm, it could just be their method of examination.

Okay, I have a friend who just had her baby a month early . now Im starting to freak. she was not prepared or ready. So now I come home and began to wash all the baby clothes and sorting through the diaper bag, and making a list of all the things I need for my hosptials bag. I am only 31 weeks this week so I know I have enough time in theory, but I do not totally unprepared. (I ran to her husband in the store when he was a mad dash to make things up to get the baby and her, when she was in hospital .)
also with my crib and crib . I know I have to wash the sheets but I was also the bumpers?

Reply:Gosh! I feel like such a slacker! Considering my shower isn't til Jan 23rd and I will be moving in with my significant other in the middle of January, we have nothing ready. We have a crib and travel system and some clothes, but I am no where Where I feel I should be!!! You put the comforter over the rail in front. Or you can drape it over a chair in the room.

Reply:alright… i haven't got the urge to super clean everything but i have been all about getting the baby stuff ready. the pack n play is set up (with batteries ready) the bassinet is ready to go (covers need to be washed but batteries are ready) swing set is ready. take home out fit.. ready… i did get a good tip to buy a pack of diapers every time i go the the store starting now so i don't have to spend a hundered dollars on diapers each time we go.
oh yeah, i have an entire bedding set for my crib (which isn't here yet) but what do i do with the comforter? i know you aren't supposed to put it in the crib… so what do you do with it?

Reply:I was casual with my first son. Just did things as It hought about them. Of course I also had college classes and finals to contend with so that took a lot of my time. I got lucky with him and he was a week late. I really would have hated missing my finals…lol.
As for feeling awful the last four weeks that isnt true for everyone. Heck we even moved on base exactly one month before I had my first son. I even mowed our yard about 5 days before I gave birth. Though Dh was mad at me for that one. I went to my brother's high school graduation the night before I went into labor. The day I went into labor I was showing family our house and the sites at the base we lived at.

I never got the nesting urge either. But I did have everything ready about 3 weeks before he was due.

Reply:my babies nursery was ready when i was 30 weeks pg. everything washed, clothes put away and hospital bag packed. my house was in great shape as well. i am glad i did that as i got very very ill after his birth (he was 2 weeks over due)

i think around 32 weeks is good because the last 4 weeks you feel so awful and if something does come up where you have an early arrival you are ready. my mom and i agree that right after your shower you should get everything ready. i am going to have my shower in Feb, so i will be about 32 weeks then. but because this is # 2, i have wayyyyyy less to do to get ready, but i know i will have wayyyyyyy more work when the little newbie gets here.

Reply:I had gone through that nesting thing…cleaned the toaster with a toothbrush….looked just like new again, scrubbed the floors on my hands and knees, disinfected and scrubbed the baby's hangers with a veggie brush…you name it. I was hospitalized for a week at 32 weeks with preterm labor and didn't even have my hospital bag packed…I didn't expect to be hospitalized (I didn't feel the contractions at the time that they hooked me up to the non-stress test) I ended up calling my DH to bring me some neccesities. Luckily our daughter waited another 3 1/2 weeks. But I can tell you, the day I got out of the hospital I had my hospital bag packed! I would wash the bumpers too.

Reply:I would wash everything and I dont' think it's too early as long as you have the energy. I started washing the baby stuff that people were giving me and that i bought (before I was even pregnant, when we were just trying) as soon as I got it, just so it would be fresh. Yeah I know that sounds stupid, lol. But i will probably have everything ready by 30 weeks, just in case, it would be awful to come home with a new baby and not have stuff for it!

Reply:I think that any time you have the energy is a good time…lol! My dd was only 9 days early and I was completely unprepared. I was packing my bag in between contractions. I never had the burst of energy they say you get right before you go into labor. I would probably wash the bumpers too.

Okay, I think this is more of a poll kind of thing, but I wanted to know how many of you went into labor on your own, versus be induced.

Im almost 38 weeks with my second daughter. I was induced at 42 weeks with my first, and likely to be caused in 39 weeks with this. Im dilated to 2 centimeters, but not quite yet depleted, and my doc thinks he for a while.

I am curious what it is to go into labor on your own, because I never have, and whether more people go on their own work or to be generated. I would like the whole experience woke DH and told him its time, I just do not feel like Im going to get to experience that, as this is my last baby. I need to vicariously live through you all for this. : D

My DH is so funny. He has tried everything to get me to go into labor. He tried to get me on the mower, we play dodge ball in the garden with our 8 years old (gently, with a soft ball;)), and today before he left for work he told me to make sure I walk around the house much. We are both so excited that we can not wait, so I know if my doctor says she will lead at 39 weeks, we will not be able to wait longer.

Anyway, I just wanted to know what everyones experiences with either go on their own, or go for an induction. Anyone care and good luck with everything!

Mandy

Reply:I am hoping that everything will go naturally for me too, right now I am scheduled to induce on my due date of April 30 and have been doing everything possible to jump start things prior. Now I have to hold off a bit again this weekend because my doc is out of town til late Sunday. *sighs*

Reply:Hi  *Congratulations on your upcoming new addition!*I have had two babies and I was induced with both so I don't know what it is like to go on my own.I think a good thing about being induced in my experience has been fast labors.I had my first child in 5 hours and my second in 4 hours and I think that is a good thing.I too am curious what it would be like to have labor to start on its own but I will probably never know cause DH says we are done having babies. We will see I guess…….time will tell. ~Stephanie

Reply:Hi,

I can tell you that I have 2 children and I was induced with the first and had natural labour with the second. If I have my choice this time around I am definately going with natural labour. When you are induced the contractions are much harder and your body just is not ready. Besides this you are also restricted in your activities when being induced wheras when you are in natural labour you can move around, go to the bathroom etc. without trying to worry about where each cord is and what should I do with it?

Hope everything goes well for you.

Kathy

Reply:Well, I have had 2 kids, and have been able to go into labor on my own on both. It was about 6 pm on my first baby, and we didn't go into the hospital till midnight that night, it took me a long time to figure out that I was actually having contractions. And my 2nd one, it was early in the morning, and did the whole wake up my husband in the night and went in to the hospital like 6am. It was really a neat experience, between us both times. I am excited to do that again. I went into labor within a week of my due date. I am very glad I have not had to been induced, I have heard that it is harder labor. Good luck, I know that there are "tricks" to start labor, but the only one that worked for me was the BD. It brought me into labor both times. I was very excited.
Does anyone know if it is safe to take Rolaids or something?
Reply:I feel for you – while I was preg with my daughter last year i had severe morning sickness for all 36 weeks i carried her – i threw up until the morning I delivered. I was hospitalized several times for dehydration. my doctor put me on zofran (it is used for chemo patients) and also reglan pump it did not cure me but it made things bareable – ask your doc what he/she thinks

Reply:I feel for you! I'm in my 11th week and most of my morning sickness has finally subsided. I find that making sure that I don't get too hungry and not overeating helps. For this pregnancy and the last, I chewed on Spearmint gum and it really seemed to help the most. Thank God for Spearmint gum! Best wishes to you!

Reply:Try not to let yourself get hungry. It's the empty stomach that does it to me. Snacking all day is also a good way to make sure you get the bizzillion servings of everything that you're supposed to be getting too.

Ginger ales do help too — get it in the health food section though, most ginger ales in the regular soda section don't really have enough ginger to do anything. I like cystallized ginger and ginger tea (Yogi makes a good one) as well.

Reply:I feel for you! I've had horrid sickness for nearly a month now. In fact I don't even call it "morning sickness" because it lasts 24/7. Whatever happens try not to let yourself become dehydrated. I just spent 3 days in the hospital this past week hooked up to an IV because of dehydration and low blood pressure. Not fun! :nono: I did my best to keep drinking ginger ale and water but the sickness got out of hand.

For me I have found that eating bananas helps. I'm going through loads of them. Like somebody said earlier, just do whatever works best for you. Hopefully the sickness will ease up soon.

Take care,

Nicole

Reply:I am almost 7 weeks and have also been getting morning sickness on and off the past week or so… I have been eating crackers, drinking ginger ale… which helps for awhile…I have also just started sucking on sour candies, which is a temperary relief, but anything is nice… I have also been trying to eat something every hour or two, this has been helping me for the most part… I usually try and eat something small, crackers, pretzels, fruit or veggies (when it isn't a horrible day)… I haven't taken any medication (besides my prenatel vitamins) since I have been pregnant, so I am not sure what is ok to take, but you can always call your doctor about that… All I keep thinking is hopefully in a few more weeks it will go away… good luck:)

Reply:Having things to suck on when you feel gaggy or sick to your stomach can help also. I have a bowl full of lifesavers and jolly ranchers next the bed. Sour things have seemed to help me as well. Also, I would eat what I could. Meaning if all that I wanted was a turkey sub, then that is what I would eat and I wouldn't force myself to eat anything else. I noticed that while I am eating the nausea subsides briefly. You might also want to try ice cream which can be very soothing to the stomach and less harsh when it comes back up.

Reply:I just went through that two days ago. Thankfully its much better. Im still queasy and I still have nausea but the throwing up everything stopped. I tried Ginger Ale, peppermints and crackers. They seemed to help me. Good Luck!!

Reply:I know TUms is ok. Not sure on rolaids though.

I think there's generally a 'miracle' cure out there for everyone, only problem being that….it's different for EVERYONE…..(Sucks huh?)

I had horrible M/S from 8-18w and the only thing that really seemed to help was a hot shower…..but I had to lay down and let the water hit my stomach….baths didn't work oddly enough.

Needless to say I took ALOT of showers those 10 weeks, thankfully we don't have to pay for water. LOL

Also you said your throwing up ALOT….if you can't keep ANYTHING down (Liquids too) Get to your doctor before you can get dehydrated!

Reply:Poor girl I know what you are going through. I am 16 weeks & still throw up every other day or so. When I was 6 weeks I posted the exact same thing. Morning noon & night was right. It was an all day thing. I sure hope it gets better for you. Not sure about the roliads but I did take Tums. I kept crackers beside my bed & ate one before I got out of bed. Nothing really helped though. As time went by it did taper off. It isn't so bad now. It started to ease up from every day to every other day as soon as I went into my 2nd trimester. I feel for you.

Good Luck!
Chris

Hi Ladies,

Im just wondering for those of you who got stretch marks . When they start showing? I am now 28 weeks and have a lot of itching, but no stretch marks on my belly. There are some beautiful specimens at the beginning of my legs though. I also noticed that some on the inside of my knees! Everywhere, but my belly!

Reply:While I was prego I had one small one above my belly button. This one showed up about 3 weeks before I delivered. I checked daily and could see nothing. Well once I got home (about 4 days later) I looked down and saw I had a few. They went from belly button to pubic bone. In a strait line, how strange is that! There are also a few small ones to the sides. The strange thing is you couldn't see them until after she was born. I thought I was in the clear. No big deal thought, she is worth every one!

Reply:I've heard that drinking a lot of water is supposed to help because well lubricated skin is less likely to stretch. I started getting them at about 22 weeks or so but they are just extensions of the ones on my hips that I got in puberty.

Reply:I was cursed with stretch marks at about two months along. They cover my whole stomach and are dark red and purple. I look like the palmer's coccoa butter commercial(sp). Nothing I have tried to lessen them works. I've tried regular lotions, coccoa butter and vitamin e. Hope you have better luck than me.

Reply:I started getting stretch marks around week 26. they literally came overnight. Since then, they've really been growing. i used cocoa butter since month 2, but if you're predisposed (possibly your mom had them) you can't do a thing to stop them.
BATTLE SCARS!
Oh, and DON'T ITCH THEM! That will make them worse…those fade less from what I hear.

Reply:I literally got my stretch marks on my belly the very last 2 weeks of my pregnancy. Thankfully, most of them are below my bellybutton, so I can still wear a 2 piece swimsuit, just not a string bikini! lol. My friend has 2 daughters and she told me with her second, she got stretchmarks all the way up to her rib cage, and she was like me with her first: she had only gotten them on her lower belly. I got lucky, with my 2nd daughter, I didnt get ANY! grrr lol if only my first had been as small!!!!I used to hate them and feel gross, but you know what? If you get them , you are still a beautiful mother and almost everyone has them somewhere. My husband doesnt care at all. I try to stay in shape, because that makes me feel better and look better. But stretch marks mean that Im a mommy, and Im proud of that!

Reply:My memory may not be right here, but I think I started getting one at around 15 wks, when my belly started popping out a bit. I'm not even sure if it's a stretch mark, but it's about an inch below where my bra strap is – right across my "lower chest," I guess… I thought at first it was the bra strap, but it's there all the time, even in the mornings. Strange…

Reply:thank you very much for your answer!! It helped alot.

Reply:It is when the fertilized egg implants itself into the uterus. Because it is implanted deeply in the uterus, it can sometimes cause bleeding and cramping.
