baby too big for age [ultrasound] [nurse]
I had my first serious ultrasound done last week. I have my report on yesterday. The nurse told me that the baby measures bigger than it should for 22 weeks. What could this be? Has anyone else had an ultrasound that their baby to read is larger than normal? Has anyone had an ultrasound done and been told that their baby is normal and a healthy weight? I need help with this. I really stressed over this. My first child weighed 7 pounds. I do not see how my second one can weigh more. Please help me.
Reply:Camden it varies, some doctors do them while others do not from what I have heard. For me I have had it done both times because those doctors believe in it. To be honest I dont know of any drs that dont require it to be done.
Reply:Sorry if I am a little off topic here. Is it true that a glucose test is not routine in the States? I heard this on a talk show the other day and was shocked! I live in Canada and the glucose test for diabetes is done at the same time several other routine blood tests are done.
With diabetes becoming an epidemic I'm surprised that a glucose test isn't done on every pregnant woman. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes during my second pregnancy and the only symptom I noticed(and didn't relate)was several UTIs. I also had one high reading after a finger prick test at the doctors office.
Reply:To answer you Barbara, I don't know if I was pregnant at the time of my last period. The ultrasound agreed with the date and had me at 22 weeks last week. They said it was just larger than should be. So, if I was 4 weeks ahead, wouldn't that mean that the ultrasound would have showed it being older than they said? Really confused now! I will tell the doctor next month about the gestational diabetes. I am sure that is what it is.
Reply:Hi,
Is there a possibility your due date is off? If you were pg at the time of your last period, you'd be 4 weeks further along than you think you are.
Ask your doctor about gestational diabetes since you do have family members that had it.
Good luck! Barbara
Reply:Thank you for your reply. I am only 23 weeks along in my pregnancy. I haven't been offered to take the test to seee if I have gestational diabetes. I didn't have it with my first, but I guess I can still get it with the second. If I do end up having it, can I watch what I eat to ensure it won't be a huge baby? My cousins had gestational diabetes. There kids were 10 pounders. I bet if my child is over 8 pounds, being I had a previous csection, they will probably make me have another csection with a baby this big. Maybe I am worrying over nothing at all. Thanks for your reply.
Reply:I had this happen. My fundal height was strange, and with being gestational diabetic, they sent me for another ultrasound to find out what was going on. Come to find out, my baby is in the 80th percentile for his age. Mine has LONG legs and LONG arms (daddy has the same). Are you diabetic? Because I know that with mine they did ab******l measurements on him as well just to make sure the diabetes wasn't affecting him.
I was told that because of the size of mine that if he doesn't come on his own in December that they'll induce during my 39th week (Jan.). Good luck! I don't think it's anything to worry about!
